Say Hello
The story of Doris Ho-Kane (née Ho) and Mark Ho-Kane (né Kane) begins in 2001 on the magical island of Manhattan. Doris traveled by air from the flatlands of Dallas, TX. Mark, by land, on a speeding train from Hudson, NY. They met at the Fashion Institute of Technology and forged a best friendship, initially bonding over vegan baking, music, and screenprinting.
In 2002, they designed a small line of D.I.Y. screenprinted tees and bags under the name Menu Design. Three years later, with newly minted degrees in fashion design and graphic design, they started a new endeavor called Beard & Bangs. Their collection was carried in over 20 stores worldwide including Barneys Tokyo, Steven Alan, Stuart & Wright, and United Arrows. Fans were from opposite ends of the celebrity spectrum: Kate Bosworth of the It Girl set and Keith Richards of legendary rock ’n’ roll royalty. Publications including ELLE, Teen Vogue, NYLON, Paper, and Rolling Stone wrote stories about their line.
In December 2008, Mark shaved his beard and Doris began the process of growing out her bangs, thus ending Beard & Bangs. In 2009, they embarked on a new project together called DOMAHOKA. It began as an e-commerce shop, quietly curated, offering a small selection from lines including A Détacher, A.P.C., Apiece Apart, Electric Feathers, Mina Stone, Mociun, and Rachel Comey. Two years later, the e-commerce shop was phased out and the blog now remains. Here’s where the story begins.
