We did something out of the ordinary today. We took a cab! We (or rather, our wallets) usually favor the subway or very long walks, but today was a bit gloomy and drizzly. And sometimes it’s romantic and very New York to successfully hail a cab in under five minutes! We arrived at Pier 59 an hour early to cash in on our most coveted Rachel Comey backstage access. Score!
Rachel Comey’s S/S 12 show marked her tenth year in the business. Two very bad ass drummers, Lizzi Bougatsos of Gang Gang Dance and Sadie Laska of Growing, performed and celebrated as Intrauterine Devices (I.U.D. for short) . Earplugs were handed out to us, but we happily endured the deafening raucous of haunting, post-apocalyptic, industrial noise. It was pure magic. The models had the perfect, powerful soundtrack in which to stomp down the runway.
Known for her incredible textile designs, this season did not disappoint with gorgeous photo prints, trompe l’oeil patterns, sheer plaids, and color blocking. The swimsuits were especially good. Tall straw hats, mysterious sunglasses, oversized travel bags, and Comey’s trademark chaussures rounded out the collection. There was a striking subtlety to it all.
Big thanks and hugs to Rachel Comey, her team, and Krupp Group for allowing us access, so that we could share this amazing show with you. Infinite love to Mark for being my partner-in-everything and beautifully documenting the show.*
*I captured the evening with my old Japanese 35mm camera, so after the film gets processed, we’ll be sharing those images with you!
